MK1 Escort Rebuild

Postby justaddmud » Mon Jan 25, 2010 2:36 pm

hello, been a bit of a bad member really, havent been on here much so figured i would start a project for it, that way i need to update it

had the car for over 10 years now, and only in july 2009 was it first made road legal (for my wedding) and since then has been working and not, leaking this that and the other and basically not working

Image

so new year i decided it was time to act take engine out, repaint it check what it actually is (cam pistons ect) rebuild setup on a rolling road then get it out and about

had to make a new shelf as i only have a tiny garage and organize 'stuff'

Image

Image

Image

then i organized all the bits i have aquired, including the 2 type 9's, the pinto (for sale) the set of 40 webbers missing some bits, the set of 45 dellorto's the bike carbs on xflow manifold and the spare set of bike carbs (think i have too many carbs)

Image
45's on pinto manifold

Image
first set of bike carbs

Image
Bike Carbs on x-flow manifold (my carbs just not my engine)

Image
pinto on new engine stand

Image
type 9 number 1

Image
type 9 number 2

then i started to strip it all down, first off was these

Image
shiney ones on the right

these will be sold to fund the rebuild

then this came off

Image

Image
couldnt get much bigger valves really :D

then i ran out of weekend, the garage tidy and shelf took most of it

so i am left with this

Image

Image

will update as and when i do things

looking to get it all done towards march where it will be on 45's with a 5 speed box and not leak vital fluids everywhere

keep it real

Its a Kent Cam - http://www.kentcams.com
A6 Cam
Application Power Band Cam Lift(mm) Valve Lift(mm) Duration Timing Full Lift VC (mm) LTDC Required Parts
Race 5000 - 9000 7.06 I 10.36 E 10.21 304 Deg 46/78 78/46 106 Deg I 0.46 E 0.51 I 3.38mm CF6 / CF7 VS39

What are you going to using the car for?? If its for road use I would get another cam as the power doesnt come in until 5-9k :(

Ive personally used the 234 (1390xflow) and 244 cams in my current 1760xflow. They are both very good cams however they do require the pistons to have pockets machined into them so that the valves dont hit them as they are high lift cams.

234 Cam
Application Power Band Cam Lift(mm) Valve Lift(mm) Duration Timing Full Lift VC (mm) LTDC Required Parts
Supersports Road 2000 - 7200 7.43 I 10.74 E 10.69 280 Deg 37/63 73/27 103 Deg I 0.56 E 0.61 I 2.84mm CF6 / CF7 VS7

244 Cam
Application Power Band Cam Lift(mm) Valve Lift(mm) Duration Timing Full Lift VC (mm) LTDC Required Parts
Supersports Rally 3000 - 8000 7.84 I 11.35 E 11.30 290 Deg 42/68 78/32 103 Deg I 0.56 E 0.61 I 3.50mm CF6 / CF7 VS7

However if you dont want to machine your pistons then you could fit one of the following:

BCf2k Cam
Application Power Band Cam Lift(mm) Valve Lift(mm) Duration Timing Full Lift VC (mm) LTDC Required Parts
Sports Fast Road 2000 - 6500 6.62 I 9.69 E 9.59 290 Deg 37/73 73/37 108 Deg I 0.36 E 0.46 I 2.18mm CF6 / CF7 VS5

BCf3k Cam
Application Power Band Cam Lift(mm) Valve Lift(mm) Duration Timing Full Lift VC (mm) LTDC Required Parts
Sports ' R ' 2500 - 7000 7.15 10.47 284 Deg 34/70 70/34 108 Deg I 0.41 E 0.41 I 2.48mm CF6 / CF7 VS5

Nope a standard one fits fine. It looks like the damage was done previously with a different sprocket as there doesnt appear to be any damage to your current one.

Heres one on ebay...

Dont forget to replace the duplex chain when you put it all back together as it may have stretched :D

thanks ian, i too came to the conclusion that it was an A6 RACE cam, to be honest it works well with what i have planned for the car as i want it to be gutless low down, why i hear you say, well during the summer i compete in the MMKMC evening grass autotests here in headcorn, and the gutless low power works out pretty well as otherwise it would just spin the wheels (trouble i had in my proton gti) and besides, getting it to 5k is no problem

my pistons are already pocketed and chambered, plus they dont come all the way up the bore leaving loads of room for the pistons

i think i have that cam chain cover on my watch list already, great minds lol

as for the chain, well, i can see honing marks on the bores still, and i know the person who had this engine built by burton at least 15 years ago stuffed the mk2 estate the engine was built for soon after it was fitted, so should imagine it is fine, it is pretty tight and doesnt even have a tensioner

i now have a complete engine gasket set, a dti gauge, a set of big end bearings 020 under size all i need now is some paint (green of corse)

then i can start reasemble

update

got the 5 speed conversion done, chopped off the original mounts and rewelded on in the 5 sp place and ordered/won a quaife rosejointed quickshift lever and already had everything else in place from the rs2000 box (prop clutch bellhousing steel lowering blocks)

also got busy on the engine

went from this

Image

then at one stage to this

Image

then some more bits

Image

then a bit more this

Image

and if i ordered the right big end bearings would have a sump on and be ready to bolt back on too

still this is next weekends work

keep it real

Cool keep us posted :D

Im just sourcing bits for my 5 speed conversion.... got the following:

-T9 box
-AP clutch plate to fit T9
-Wide gearbox mount

Just ordered/won the following on ebay...
-Alloy RS2000 bellhousing and new clutch fork
-Speedo cable for T9
-Single piece prop
-Alloy gearbox lowering blocks (not sure if I need them but they went for 99p :D)
-rosejointed quickshift (apparently they rattle to buggery but if you fit a grease nipple and pack with grease then that solves the problem?? Not sure but ill give it ago!!)

I know ive got to make/find/buy an adapter tofit the clutch cable to. (Found this which should do the job.... http://www.rwdmotorsport.com/Bellhousings/Bellhousing-Accessories/RS2000-Clutch-Cable-Adaptor-Plate/prod_7.htmlImage)

Do I need anything else?? Will the existing clutch cable fit?
